Review Zenspirations, Letters & Patterning by professional calligrapher Joanne Fink is sure to be popular with everyone who loves her videos as well as anyone who enjoys paper crafts, scrapbooking, card-making, illustration and making personalized gifts. In her introduction Joanne writes, "I fell in love with patterning in the summer of 2008 when I discovered the wonderful world of Zentangle , an art form developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. Since then I have incorporated patterning into my work, and call my new style Zenspirations." Joanne's new book Zenspirations is an 8 x 8-inch, 52-page (including covers) softcover that demonstrates in much greater detail the patterning techniques in Joanne's videos and contains many examples of her colorful and whimsical illustrations. Joanne reviews her seven basic patterns and suggests ways to add more detail to each. From there she moves on to filler patterns and vertical patterning - dangles that "hang" off the edge of a horizontal strip. The next sections demonstrate various pattern types and examples - circles and simple circle designs, simple flower designs, wave patterns, and pattern blocks. In the coloring tools section Joanne talks about her favorite coloring tools and paper supplies. She discusses techniques for each - working with dark and light backgrounds, watercolor paints and techniques, and the paper she chooses for water media. The next sections are about embellished frames, creating patterned illustrations, flower and leaf designs and simple landscapes - all with many examples to spark your creativity. The final section of the book is about lettering, embellished monograms and how to use words in shapes. Zenspirations will teach you how to create beautiful patterns to add a whole new dimension of interest to your favorite crafts. I really like the author -Joanne Fink- and her teaching style, a lot.I watch her videos on YT done for Sakura products . She teaches you how to do Zentangle type art with Sakura products.Sakura makes various pens/paints for exactly this type of artwork as depicted in this book. However, this book felt like one big promotional ad for Sakura products with very little teaching information. In fact, what this book offered in information, I had already gotten off one of her videos. This book is scant with HOW TO's- and it is written in a style that is definitely for beginners. But even beginners might be disappointed in how little is offered here in the way of information.Joanne Fink is wonderful to watch at work and her enthusiasm for the kind of art work she teaches is very contagious. I am both surprised and disappointed this book did not offer more for the price. It is a thin trade sized paperback. On the upside, what instruction she does offer in the book, she does offer clearly and concisely.Yet, overall the book is a big disappointment :-( If you have to buy this- get a used edition. And if check her out on YT under both her name and Sakura. As a side note- I purchased via Amazon through one of their LIGHTENING DEALS, a superb set of pens that you would use for Zentangle type art- Pigma Micron 6 piece set in Black. The set comes with 6 different sizes and is a set Fink would recommend. I love how they write/draw! If you have not bought your gel pen set yet, check out Amazon for this great set by Sakura!
